State Sen. Barbara L'Italien is exploring a run for Congress, the Andover Democrat announced Wednesday.

In a statement released less than three hours after Congresswoman Niki Tsongas said she would not seek reelection, L'Italien cited her friendship with Tsongas and a desire to continue her legacy. L'Italien said she introduced Tsongas at a National Conference of State Legislatures networking event on Tuesday, and said Tsongas emphasized the importance of having women serve in all levels of government, a theme Tsongas also touched on in her announcement Wednesday.
