BILL AIMS TO PUT SQUEEZE ON FAKE SERVICE DOGS

People who rely on service animals told lawmakers Tuesday that there are many "fake service dogs" whose owners attempt to take advantage of the rights typically reserved for people with legitimate service animals, like bringing their dogs to certain public places.

Rep. Kim Ferguson of Holden filed legislation (H 2277) that would establish a civil penalty for someone who "expressly or impliedly represents that a dog in his or her possession is his or her service dog or a service-dog-in-training for the purpose of obtaining any rights or privileges afforded disabled persons accompanied by service dogs, but unavailable to people and their pets."
