STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, OCT. 11, 2017.....Merrimack Valley Democrats are rallying Wednesday around Andy Vargas, the Haverhill city councilor who on Tuesday night became his party's nominee to succeed former House Ways and Means chairman Brian Dempsey.

Vargas topped Haverhill School Committee member Paul Magliocchetti in Tuesday's primary and will face Republican Shaun Toohey, who also serves on the school committee, in the Nov. 7 special election. Dempsey resigned his House seat this summer to take a senior position at the lobbying firm ML Strategies.

Vargas, Magliocchetti, Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini and Democratic Party Chair Gus Bickford planned to hold a "unity event" in Haverhill on Wednesday.
