WOMEN LEGISLATORS CALL FOR END TO WAGE GAP

WOMEN LEGISLATORS CALL FOR END TO WAGE GAP : Lawmakers called for an end to the wage gap between men and woman Tuesday at an observation of "Equal Pay Day." Hosted by the Caucus of Women Legislators, the annual April 12 event marks the day of the year to which women would need to work in order to earn the same average wages that men earned the previous year. Attorney Lauren Stiller Rikleen, founder of the Rikleen Institute for Strategic Leadership, said women still earn only 77 percent of the total wages earned by men and are pursuing degrees in expanding industries like information sciences and engineering at slower or decreasing rates. "If some of those facts don't enrage all of us, I don't know what will," said Sen. Karen Spilka (D-Ashland.) Lawmakers are pushing two pairs of bills to close the gap. Rep. Alice Wolf (D-Cambridge) and Sen. Patricia Jehlen's H 1415 and S 931 require comparable wages for comparable work between sexes. Sen. Harriette Chandler and Wolf are pushing bills (S 931 and H 1567) authorizing a study to update the state job classification system to determine job comparability. According to the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus, state laws prohibit employers from paying male or female employees differently for comparable work and the bills will address loopholes by defining "comparable work." Spilka said after the event that Senate President Therese Murray is aware of the bills. Spilka hopes to have the bills passed by the end of the current legislative session. "We have the motivation and the will to get this done," Spilka said. 04/12/2011

I WANNA BE THE MINORITY: If you blinked, you missed it - that concupiscent sparkle in the eye of House Republican Leader Brad Jones, an almost flirtatious glimpse that cooed silently: "Sal DiMasi, will you be my Valentine?" For Jones, the news that DiMasi, the former speaker of the House and current federal inmate, has been bopping around New England - in all likelihood to testify in a white-hot patronage investigation that could net his old Democratic friends and allies in the Legislature - was the icing on a red velvet cake served by a GOP that appeared to hit its election year stride midweek.  Read more

WEEK OF FEB. 19, 2012: Lawmakers next week have an opportunity to put two big areas of spending - education and health and human services - under the microscope at budget hearings in Boston and Amherst. Sticking to custom, the House and Senate are downshifting from an already fairly light schedule in deference to the holiday-shortened February school vacation week. The meetings of the House and Senate Ways and Means committees, sitting jointly, highlight a calendar that features only informal House and Senate sessions scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday.  Read more
