PRE-TRIAL JUSTICE REFORMS RAMPANT ACROSS THE STATES

BOSTON, AUG. 8, 2017.....Nationwide, 500 new state laws in the past five years have addressed the pretrial side of criminal justice, an area every state has tackled in one way or another, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

During the NCSL annual summit on Tuesday, officials from other states highlighted their experience with one particular pretrial policy -- reforming cash bail systems in hopes of jailing fewer people solely for their inability to pay. They said efforts to reform pre-trial detention policies often face challenges on their path into law, but can also ultimately pay off by reducing incarceration and recidivism rates.
